So, if you have been using Eudora for eons (or just discovered it now) and now got a Gmail account, you can still use Eudora with it by receiving and sending all your Gmail messages in Eudora. Of course, you can access Gmail via its fine web-based interface at the same time.
Access Gmail with Eudora Using IMAP
To set up a Gmail account in Eudora via IMAP (which gives you access to all archived mail and lets you use Gmail labels as folders) under Windows:
- Make sure IMAP access is enabled in Gmail.
- Select Tools | Personalities from the menu in Eudora.
- Click in the personalities window with the right mouse button.
- Select New... from the context menu.
- Choose Skip directly to advanced account setup.
- Click Finish.
- Type "Gmail" under Personality Name:.
- Type your name under Real Name:.
- Type your Gmail address under Email Address:.
- Type your Gmail account name under User Name:.
- Your account name is what precedes "@gmail.com" in your Gmail address. If your address is "homers@gmail.com", for example, type "homers".
- Type "smtp.gmail.com" under SMTP Server:.
- Make sure Required, Alternate Port is selected under Secure Sockets when Sending.
- Go to the Incoming Mail tab.
- Type "imap.gmail.com" under Server:.
- Make sure IMAP is selected under Configuration:.
- Make sure Required, Alternate Port is the Secure Sockets when Receiving choice.
- Click OK.
- Type your Gmail password under Password:.
- Click OK.
To add Gmail as an IMAP account to Eudora on a Mac:
- Select Special | Settings... from the menu.
- Go to the Personalities category.
- Click New under Personality to Configure.
- Enter "Gmail" under Personality Name:.
- Type your full Gmail email address under User Name: for Checking Mail.
- Enter "imap.gmail.com" under Mail Server:.
- Now enter "smtp.gmail.com" under SMTP Server:.
- Type your Gmail email address under Email Address:.
- Make sure Allow authorization is checked under Sending Mail.
- Go to the Personality Extras category.
- Click OK if you are asked whether you want to rename the personality.
- Make sure "Gmail" is selected under Personality:.
- Make sure IMAP is selected under Mail Protocol:.
- Make sure Use a trash mailbox on the IMAP server is not checked.
- Now go to the SSL category.
- Make sure, again, "Gmail" is selected under Personality:.
- Select Required (Alternate Port) under SSL for SMTP.
- Select Required (Alternate Port) under SSL for IMAP, too.
- Click OK.
- Select Window | Mailboxes from the menu.
- Highlight the new "Gmail" account.
- Click the Options button (the rightmost beneath the mailbox list).
- Select Refresh Mailbox List from the menu.
- Enter your Gmail password under Password:.
- Click OK.
Access Gmail with Eudora Using POP
To download your Gmail messages in Eudora:
- Make sure POP access is turned on for your Gmail account.
- Select Tools | Personalities from the menu in Eudora.
- Click in the personalities window with the right mouse button.
- Select New... from the context menu.
- Choose Skip directly to advanced account setup.
- Click Finish.
- Type "Gmail" under Personality Name:.
- Type your name under Real Name:.
- Type your Gmail address under Email Address:.
- Type your full Gmail address again under User Name:.
- Type "smtp.gmail.com" under SMTP Server:.
- Make sure Required, Alternate Port is selected under Secure Sockets when Sending.
- Go to the Incoming Mail tab.
- Type "pop.gmail.com" under Server:.
- Make sure POP is selected under Configuration:.
- Make sure Required, Alternate Port is the Secure Sockets when Receiving choice.
- Click OK.
